Roald Amundsen, the Norwegian explorer who led the first expedition to set foot on the South Pole named it after the Queen of Norway at that time (1911).</span><br /><br />There are a number of research stations located in Queen Maud Land, among them two from Norway (Troll and Tor). June 18, 1928) was a Norwegian explorer of polar regions. He led the first successful Antarctic expedition to the South Pole between 1910 and 1912. He disappeared in June 1928 while taking part in a rescue mission.
